25 Things Every Bride Should Know Before Wedding Dress Shopping

Posted by Vicki Anthony on

Shopping for your wedding dress is one of the most exciting moments of your wedding planning journey. But if it's your first bridal appointment, it's completely normal to feel a little nervous.

At All About Eve Bridalwear, we've helped thousands of brides find their dream dress. Here are 25 things every bride should know before stepping into a bridal boutique.

wedding dress shopping advise

1. Start shopping early

Ideally, begin looking for your dress 9–12 months before your wedding. This gives you plenty of time for ordering and alterations without feeling rushed.

2. Keep an open mind

Many brides leave with a dress they never imagined wearing. Trust your stylist and be willing to try something different.

3. Bridal sizing is different

Don't be surprised if your wedding dress size is larger than your usual high street size. Bridal sizing varies between designers and is simply a number on the label.

4. Set a realistic budget

Know your budget before you arrive and share it with your stylist. They'll only show you dresses within your price range.

5. Don't visit too many boutiques

Trying on hundreds of dresses can become overwhelming. Quality appointments are much more valuable than quantity.

6. Wear nude underwear

Simple nude underwear helps you focus on the dress without distractions.

7. A strapless bra isn't usually needed

Most bridal gowns have built-in support, so many brides don't wear a bra at all during appointments. But if you feel more comfortable, then a strapless would be recommended.

8. Bring the right people

Choose one to three people whose opinions you genuinely value. Too many voices can make the decision much harder. But again, if you want more, then we can accommodate you and yur crew

9. Your stylist is on your side

Our bridal stylists aren't there to sell you the most expensive dress—they're there to help you find the one that makes you feel amazing. We make every bride feel special, and most of our brides say it is like shopping with their new bridal bestie!

10. You don't need to know exactly what you want

It's perfectly normal to arrive with no idea where to start. That's what your appointment and your stylist is for.

11. Try on different silhouettes

Even if you've always pictured yourself in a fitted gown, you might fall in love with an A-line or ball gown. It is important to try different shapes and go out of your normal comfort zone,

12. Trust how you feel, not just how you look

The right dress should feel like you. Confidence is just as important as appearance.

13. Don't compare yourself to social media

Pinterest and Instagram are great for inspiration, but every bride, body and wedding is unique.

14. Your dress doesn't need everyone else's approval

The most important opinion is yours.

15. Try your dress with a veil

A veil often completes the look and creates the magical bridal moment many brides are waiting for.

16. Alterations are completely normal

Almost every wedding dress needs alterations to achieve the perfect fit, so make sure you budget for them. Our stylists can help advise on the process and recommend a seamstress in your area.

17. Samples aren't made to fit perfectly

The dresses you try on are sample gowns, so don't worry if they need clipping or pinning during your appointment. While we have many samples in multiple sizes, we are experts at making them look and feel amazing, even if they may not be your size.

18. Comfort matters

You'll be wearing your dress for many hours, so make sure you can walk, sit and dance comfortably.

19. Think about your venue

Your dress should complement your wedding setting, whether you're getting married in a castle, a barn, a church or on the beach.

20. Don't wait for the "perfect" body

Order the dress for the body you have now. Alterations can usually accommodate small changes closer to your wedding.

21. Photos can help—but don't rely on them

Sometimes a dress looks incredible in person but photographs differently. Trust the mirror and how you feel.

22. It's okay if you don't cry

Some brides burst into tears, while others simply smile and know they've found their dress. Both reactions are completely normal.

23. Ask questions

Your stylist is there to help. Don't be afraid to ask about fabrics, alterations, accessories or timelines.

24. Enjoy the experience

Wedding dress shopping isn't just another task on your wedding checklist—it's a memory you'll treasure for years.

25. Trust the moment

When you find the right dress, you'll often stop comparing it to everything else. Instead, you'll start imagining yourself walking down the aisle in it.
